International Socialism posted by Richard Seymour

The latest International Socialism journal is out, and it has some particular goodies worth checking out in advance of Marxism 2010. To wit: Sebastien Budgen's superlative tribute to Daniel Bensaid; Joseph Choonara's review of an intriguing pair of books by Dimitris Milonakis and Ben Fine; Gonzalo Pozo on the permanent arms economy; Ian Birchall on anarchism; and Gareth Dale and Xanthe Whittaker on sex work.

While I'm here, I had meant to plug the ISO's annual Socialism conference that took place in Chicago recently. Instead, here is the excellent We Are Many website, which boasts an array of radical MP3s and videos, including comprehensive coverage of the Socialism event. Several ISO luminaries will be speaking at Marxism this year.

The changing face of racism posted by Richard Seymour

Me in the latest ISJ, on racism in Britain today:

Instead of looking for a reference to supposed static entities called “races” to define acts of racism, it makes more sense to consider racialisation as a constant process. Just as fascism is notoriously a “scavenger” ideology, opportunistically appropriating ideological bric-a-brac from other outlooks and traditions, so racist ideologies are continually constructed and reconstructed with a variety of elements of national, regional, religious, sectional and class stereotypes. What they have in common is their relationship to the practice of racial oppression in which a minority is systemically excluded from the opportunities and entitlements of normal citizenship. Nor are they strictly literal in their expression. Racism operates to a great extent by allusion and conflation—mark the speed with which “Muslim” was substituted for “Asian” in the target of racist polemics after 2001. Indeed, that very shift tells us that the cultural racism currently directed against Muslims is rooted in several generations of anti-immigrant racism and, before it, imperial racism.

Chris Harman RIP posted by Richard Seymour

I am saddened to hear the news that Chris Harman, revolutionary socialist and leading theoretician of the International Socialist tradition, died following a cardiac arrest in Cairo last night. Before his death, he edited the International Socialism journal, and had written an accessible critique of mainstream economic theory, Zombie Capitalism. I personally owe a considerable portion of my Bildung to the man, as it was trawling his back catalogue - Explaining the Crisis, Economics of the Madhouse, etc., plus innumerable articles for International Socialism, (sophisticated polemics against high theorists such as Ernest Mandel and Alec Nove among them) - that enabled me to first get a basic grip of some economic theory. In addition, his historical work, culminating in the magisterial A People's History of the World, provided an invaluable introduction to the topics I would later have to deal with in my degree. Generations of socialists will owe a similar debt, I expect. He is also one of the few such writers to have his work recommended in an album sleeve.
