EDL driven off the streets in Bolton posted by Richard Seymour
Just had a great talk at today's Left Forum, and logged on to find that antifascists have forced the EDL to abandon its protest in Bolton's Victoria Square today. There's a report at Socialist Worker here. It seems that the police were particularly vicious, attacking and beating antifascist protesters, arresting a number of them (only to later 'un-arrest' them, which proves that it was really about expediting their removal from the protest rather than about any offense committed). Local reports suggest that the police arrested 30 antifascists compared to three arrests of the notoriously violent EDL. I have also seen on UAF's twitter page that police attempted to prevent a Muslim delegation from joining the protesters, but that a crowd of hundreds of local Asians tipped the balance when they came to side with the antifascists as riot cops attacked them. So, despite some difficult odds, the antifascists won the day.Footage of heavy-handed Bolton cops:
